Historical Walks and Culture Tours Committee

Description: The Historical Walks and Cultural Tours Committee is a group of students passionate about history and culture. They have designed each tour themselves, creating an engaging program that introduces visitors to Shanghai's rich heritage through guided walks.

Behind the Bund

This tour explores the rich history and hidden stories of the area immediately behind Shanghai's famous Bund waterfront. While the Bund's river front hosted international banks and trading houses, this district was the engine of global commerce, filled with back-alley exchanges, guild halls, and the homes of powerful merchants and early revolutionaries. Participants will uncover the intercultural dynamics, economic rivalries, and daily life of both foreign and Chinese residents who navigated the rapidly modernizing and often chaotic metropolis, revealing the complex, layered history that shaped Shanghai into the "Paris of the East."

Concession Crossroads: Politics & The French Concession

Dive into the fascinating and often turbulent political landscape of the former Shanghai French Concession, examining how its unique status as an extraterritorial zone influenced both local Chinese politics and global affairs. This tour highlights key sites and stories of revolutionary activities, nationalist movements, and clandestine political maneuverings that flourished under, and often in defiance of, French administration. Discover how the Concession became a sanctuary and a stage for figures like Sun Yat-sen and Zhou Enlai, tracing the development of modern Chinese political thought and the struggle for national sovereignty within this distinctively international settlement.
